Easter Monday in The Netherlands

We are having a quiet day at our apartment.  This evening we have been invited to dinner with Elizabeth’s son Dennis, his wife Petra and daughters Floor and Anna.

Floor has recently passed her driving test and we are looking forward to seeing her skills as we go to Leimuiden.

Here are some random pics of Leimuiden:

I have not been there before so I am looking forward to seeing the sights on our journey.

As usual we took our walk before lunch.  We saw some more pollarded trees and a lone swan. Here’s a few pictures:

These are the first tulips I’ve seen since we have been here. Beautiful!

Dennis and Floor came to collect us at 1600 as planned. Floor was driving and we travelled in luxury - my first time in a Porsche!
Floor turned out to be an excellent driver and we arrived in Leimuiden.

Petra had prepared a wonderful 4 course meal which we all enjoyed immensely. We were in good company and had a very convivial evening. I enjoyed a couple of glasses of excellent French wine. At the end of the evening Dennis presented me with a special bottle of wine which I look forward to sampling during the rest of our holiday.

It was wonderful for Elizabeth to see her son, daughter-in-law and granddaughters. And they seemed to enjoy our company too!

After our meal Floor returned us to our apartment here in Wormer.  We were home in time to see a movie: “Gone Girl”. A good thriller with an enigmatic ending.

And so to bed…..

Going Green…

From our apartment window we often see and hear green parrots. This seems a bit strange here in Europe so I thought I check out what Mr Google had to say about them:

The Wild Green Parakeet

The green parrot, or parakeet, is probably one of the most unexpected avian species you can regularly spot in the Netherlands. Usually associated with tropical weather, the colorful birds seem to have successfully adapted to the colder Dutch weather and can be seen all over its cities. Initially brought from abroad in the 1970s as pets, the reasons for their establishment and proliferation around the country is linked to many urban legends. From an old women who would have purposely released a mating pair, to an accident involving a truck carrying exotic birds, the only thing that is certain is that the species is here to stay.

At the centre of their controversy, the birds are considered a pest by many and are even said to cause a negative ecological impact due to their territorial nature, leading them to be included on a list of the 100 worst invasive alien species. They are also a source of nuisance for many residents as they can be particularly noisy. This includes the Dutch parliament whom, according to rumours, have been their victims on multiple occasions with some debates being completely drowned out by their noise. Despite that, most residents wouldn’t have it any other way and to this day, you can still find many people, including newcomers, regularly marvelling the sight of them.

I certainly enjoy seeing these colourful birds and so far their noise is less than the passing aircraft on their way to Schiphol.

For some reason they always make me think of the Monty Python parrot sketch - but these are Dutch Greens not Norwegian Blues!

They would probably be very welcome in Ireland. They are the right green for “The Emerald Isle” - especially suitable for St Patrick’s day.

Easter Sunday.

This morning is a mild cloudy day.  Not much sign of the lovely sun we had yesterday.  But it’s staying dry and not too cold so we are planning a walk in the surrounding countryside today.

Here a few pics I took along the way:

I had been hoping to spot some herons.  This one decided to fly away before I could get close enough for a good picture.

Of course wherever we go round here water is always nearby.

The people here seem to pollard their garden trees almost to extinction! I suppose the hard pruning will encourage more growth of what I presume will be beautiful blossom and leaves.  Maybe we will see them when we return in the autumn.

I have now found out that these are mulberry trees which produce delicious and healthy berries in late summer.

Here is that elusive heron again…

This lovely old house, built in the style of the Amsterdam school of architecture once belonged to the managing director of Van Gelder and Son. They were paper manufacturers and for many years were the main employer of people in Wormer.

The last part of our walk takes us along this interesting street:

We always have a little laugh about the origin of the name. In Dutch “koker” means a tube - usually referring to a cardboard tube like the ones found at the centre of a toilet roll. When Elizabeth originally told me this I couldn’t believe anyone would want to call a street after that! Ever since then I have called this street “toilet roll street”.

After working up a good appetite from our walk we enjoyed our lunch very much.

Now Elizabeth is away on her bike to Yolande to have her hair cut. I will be seeing a new pixie later! 🧚‍♀️. It’s very nice for her to have a sister with so many skills.

1742hrs.
We are settling down for a relaxing dinner and happy evening watching movies.

Maybe some more news tomorrow?

Groetjes uit Nederland

Saturday 08/04/2023

We greet you from Wormer on a sunny day. The forecast is for it to remain so all day. So that’s a perfect start to our holiday.

We both feel refreshed after a good night’s sleep and have had a leisurely breakfast.

We completed our Duolingo language lessons.

Elizabeth is going shopping on her bike whilst I poodle about in the apartment.

One task I have been set by the mistress of the house is to assemble her reading lecturn/book stand.  This is used as a holder for her iPad and for mine we are watching downloaded movies. When packed in our cases the component parts of this device caused a little concern with airport security. I can see how one part in particular could look like a gun barrel.  But I didn’t assemble a sniper rifle just the very handy device.  It was very easy.  There were no ‘ikea’ difficulties.  Here is the finished article - all ready for a movie tonight.

We had a nice lunch and then took a walk to do a little more grocery shopping. On the way I noticed this lovely Old Dutch house: there are lots of similar ones around here.

We are now relaxing with tea and beer and will just chill out for the rest of the day. That’s what holidays are for!

We wish all of you a very happy Easter. (This is a lovely video sent to us by Yolande and Leo).

More news tomorrow (maybe).

Up, Up and Away!

Friday 07/04/2023 - 0847hrs

We got up a little earlier than usual this morning. I guess we are a bit excited about our trip to the Netherlands.  Like children going to Disneyland! Only our theme park consists of windmills and tulips and dykes and cheese!

Elizabeth is so well organised that there is very little to do in the way of packing. I have carried our cases downstairs and we only need to add our iPads before we go.

So we will follow our usual morning routine and have breakfast before doing our Duolingo language courses - Dutch for me and Spanish for Elizabeth.

We are going to forego our morning walk today.  This is a very rare event which only happens perhaps twice a year.  But we figure we will make up the steps with all the walking at the airports and stations on our journey.

We are leaving for the airport 40 minutes earlier than we had originally planned as there are some concerns about holiday traffic.  According to Google there will be about a 15 minute addition to our driving time and that could get worse as the day progresses.  So better safe than sorry we are now leaving at 1230. All these drivers must be hunting for Easter Eggs!

1427hrs
Well here we are at Heathrow.  We are very early for our flight! I suppose that is infinitely better than being late for it. All has gone smoothly so far. Although security did think that the assembly tools for Elizabeth’s reading lectern were a risk. An Alan key and a spanner looked suspicious on the scanner. So she had to open the case.  Luckily a supervisor realised that two 76 year olds did not pose a risk.
But I shouldn’t joke about it, it’s important that they are thorough with these checks.

Now we are relaxing until it’s time to go to our departure gate. We went for a drink at a very noisy pub bar.  But all good. Just waiting to know our gate number.

1737hrs
We are on board our plane which was supposed to depart at 1710.  But the truck pushing the plane back from the gate has broken down and we have to wait for a maintenance crew. Apparently this could take some time as they have to go through the full security process and that is very busy today. So we are sat here on the runway waiting….

2313hrs. Wormer.
We eventually arrived at our apartment here at about 2200 having been met by Yolande and Leo. There had been some further delays with immigration and baggage collection.  Plus some confusion over trains.

So we are both pretty exhausted now and looking forward to a bit of relaxation and a good night’s sleep.

Our holiday begins for real tomorrow.

Be prepared!

When it comes to preparing for one of our twice yearly visits to the Netherlands I have to admit to letting Elizabeth do most of the work. But I did help with booking the tickets.

We fly out of Heathrow on Good Friday.  We are hoping that the industrial action by security staff will remain confined to terminal 5 (we leave from terminal 4). The advice is to get to the airport 3 hours before the flight, so that’s what we are planning.

I bought a new wheeled cabin case and Elizabeth will pack all my essentials for me.

Our good friend Brian is kindly taking us to the airport (and collecting us on our return).  He has just recovered from a bout of COVID but is now testing negative.  Just when we thought it was all over!

Elizabeth’s sister Yolande is also helping us by doing a grocery shop and collecting us from the station in Wormerveer when we arrive.  There was some talk of a strike by train drivers but we hope we can still travel as normal.  Yolande and Leo help us in so many ways.

We are really looking forward to seeing our friends and family again.

As part of our preparations I have been working hard on my Dutch language skills and I hope that on this visit I will be able to converse a bit more in the local language - but I’m not very confident.

We have not made definite plans for day trips during our visit but have a couple of social meetings arranged which we are both looking forward to

On this trip we are going to try using local buses and trains in order to go a little further afield.  We may even get as far as Amsterdam where I would like to take a walk and see the canals and old buildings.

So tomorrow my dear Elizabeth will pack the cases and apart from some last minute stuff we will be ready to go.

Another adventure begins…..

These Boots were made for walking…..

They are actual the shoes that my dearest Elizabeth got for me as a Christmas Gift. It’s all part of her plan to keep me fit and healthy.

I need good shoes because we go walking every day without fail. In the past three years I think we have only missed three days when the weather was so bad we just couldn’t go.

We normally do a 1.6 mile (2.6 kilometre) walk after our morning coffee and before lunch every day. When the weather is a bit warmer we also travel once per week to somewhere in the New Forest for a somewhat longer walk (and a picnic).

Recently we have started doing a second 1.6 mile walk after lunch.  But not every day.

In view of the claims made by my personal trainer, in order to persuade me to keep walking every day, I thought I’d check them out with Dr Google.

Here’s a list of the health benefits which can be obtained from walking.

Maintain a healthy weight and lose body fat.

Prevent or manage various conditions, including heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, cancer and type 2 diabetes.

Improve cardiovascular fitness.

Strengthen your bones and muscles.

Improve muscle endurance.

Increase energy levels.

Improve your mood, cognition, memory and sleep.

Improve your balance and coordination.

Strengthen immune system.

Reduce stress and tension.

The faster, farther and more frequently you walk, the greater the benefits. For example, you may start out as an average walker, and then work your way up to walking faster and walking a mile in a shorter amount of time than an average walker, similar to power walkers. This can be a great way to get aerobic activity, improve your heart health and increase your endurance while burning calories.

So you can see it’s well worth making the effort.

For us it is also delightful to see how nature changes day to day and to visit our bird friends and squirrels we see all around us.

I also have the added bonus of spending time with my lovely lady in the fresh air.

</ span>

So put those boots on and give it a try!

“They think it’s all over”

"They think it's all over" is a quote from Kenneth Wolstenholme's BBC TV commentary in the closing moments of the 1966 FIFA World Cup Final, when England beat West Germany 4–2 after extra time to win the FIFA World Cup. In the final few seconds of the match, Wolstenholme said:

And here comes Hurst! He's got...

(Wolstenholme is distracted by some of the crowd spilling onto the pitch)

Some people are on the pitch! They think it's all over!

(Geoff Hurst scores to put England two goals ahead)

It is now, it's four!

Soon after the 1966 victory, Wolstenholme's quote became a widely used expression.

Well now it really is over following England’s defeat by France. We watched an exciting match only to be disappointed by a missed penalty by England’s captain, Harry Kane, which meant that the England team will now be on their way home to our freezing weather.

That will be the end of my sport watching until the Ashes cricket series starts in June next year. Then I will be glued to the TV except for when the chief fitness instructor takes me on my daily walk.

Meantime I will post here from time to time when inspiration finds me.

Now let’s do Christmas!

A Cold Spell of Weather.

After the warmth of Qatar the Dutch team will certainly feel the cold when they get home after losing their quarter-final match. But they tried very hard and came very close to a win, only losing in the penalty shoot out. We watched the match. It was a tough one and at times quite violent with feelings running high. The general feeling was that the referee did not control the match well. Our friend Betty thinks that all footballers are spoilt madmen! There was certainly some behaviour on the pitch last night which was reminiscent of spoilt school kids.

This afternoon I will watch the match between Portugal and Morocco. Then tonight we will have another early dinner before the big match of England against France. I hope to see some mature, professional behaviour!

For some days we have been experiencing a period of very cold weather. Temperatures have fallen to -4C overnight and have stayed below zero on some days.

Consequently our gas central heating has been used a bit more than usual.

We are always very careful how we use energy so our gas account is in credit. We have also received some payments from our governments both here and in the Netherlands. Our house is well insulated and has an efficient heating system. We are able to monitor our energy usage and spend using our smart meter.  It really shows how a cold spell increases costs. We are lucky and can afford to stay comfortable. Roll on summer! 🌞🌞🌞

So we are managing to stay warm and Elizabeth is still hanging laundry outside to dry. Despite the cold there has been some sunshine.

The forecast is for the cold weather to continue right up to what might be a white Christmas.

Despite the cold there is still beauty in nature..

We continue to enjoy our walks through the crisp cold air and have been seeing lots of robins, which we always associate with winter and Christmas.
More football news tomorrow 🤞🤞🤞

Football Fever 🥵

Not so much a fever for Elizabeth and I - more like a mild rise in temperature and a slight increase in our pulse rate.

Neither of us are huge soccer fans, but we have enjoyed watching the matches in which The Netherlands and England have been playing.

Elizabeth is not a big fan of watching sport - she prefers to play and I only really enjoy watching England play cricket in the summer.

Nevertheless Alexa has been playing us “football’s coming home” and Elizabeth has been reading articles about the Dutch team and Manager.

Here are her heroes!

I have been supporting the Dutch team too since I would like to see a final involving England v The Netherlands. That would certainly make for interesting viewing!

Perhaps then Elizabeth will dye her hair Orange and I will wear my three lions shirt…

This evening we are having and early dinner so we can watch the quarter final match between The Netherlands and Argentina.

Tomorrow it is England’s turn in the quarter final against France.

I hope these guys can take us through….

Good luck to both teams and happy viewing to those of you who are interested.

The Autumn leaves are showing their true colours.

When we took our daily walk yesterday we noticed that Autumn is slowly making progress towards winter. But the weather has been very mild and many trees still retain their leaves.  But it’s a nice time of year to be around trees as their colours change.

When we returned home we were delighted to see that our lovely yellow rose is blooming.  Other roses in the garden have buds too so we hope for a late splash of colour.

Nature continues to entertain and delight every day.

Parsnips for taste and health

Last night we had roast potatoes and parsnips for dinner. It was delicious and I thought I would make a few notes about the tasty vegetable. We simply steamed ours and served them straight from the pan  but we can also mash them with chopped peppers or roast them.

Parsnips are fairly cheap. Ours cost 62p for 500g. There was enough for two large portions and a couple left over.

Here is all the good stuff I found out about this unique tasting vegetable.

Parsnips, Pastinaca sativa, are a root vegetable in the Apaiaceae family. They have white or cream-colored flesh and a sweet, slightly nutty flavor. Parsnips originated in the Mediterranean region and spread around the world. They were domesticated early in agricultural history and became a staple food. The benefits of parsnips include dense nutrient content and hardiness. They grow almost anywhere agriculture is possible, and have a long growing season. Planting before winter enhances their sweet flavour. Here are some of the health benefits of eating parsnips.

1. Dietary Fiber

Many of parsnip's digestive and cardiovascular health benefits are due to the root's high fiber content. Dietary fiber reduces the risk of diverticulitis and helps prevent constipation or diarrhea. Most fiber in parsnips is soluble. This type of fiber dissolves in water, to a limited extent, but it is not absorbed during digestion. Soluble fiber binds to cholesterol particles and carries those particles out of the body. It can help reduce cholesterol levels and lower the risk of heart disease.

2. Bones and Teeth

Parsnips are good for healthy bones and teeth. They are rich in calcium and contain manganese and zinc, which are necessary for absorbing that calcium. Vitamin K aids in keeping bones and teeth healthy and preventing osteoporosis by further enhancing calcium absorption. Manganese is part of the process of forming and repairing bone and cartilage.

3. Potassium

Parsnips are rich in potassium, which the body requires for cell energy production, electrolyte balance, nerve signals, and many other essential functions. A single cup of parsnip contains 499 milligrams of potassium. An additional benefit of parsnips is low sodium content, so this vegetable is a good choice for people on reduced-sodium diets.

4. Polyacetylene Antioxidants

Parsnips contain a variety of polyacetylene antioxidants such as falcarinol, falcarindiol, panaxydiol, and methyl-falcarindiol. Falcarindol has anti-inflammatory properties and may have some ability to prevent colon cancer. Polyacetylene antioxidants protect skin cells from UV damage and lower the risk of various skin cancers. Sun exposure destroys these anti-oxidants, so replacing them by consuming parsnips and similar foods is one way to combat depletion.

5. Thiamine

Many manufacturers add thiamine or vitamin B1 to foods such as cereals and bread. This vitamin occurs naturally in many grains and vegetables, including parsnips. An illness associated with thiamine deficiency, beriberi, damages nerves and may cause heart failure. Thiamine is essential for breaking down carbohydrates in the digestive system and may help prevent deficiencies and certain cancers. One cup of parsnip contains over a third of the daily recommended amount of thiamine.

6. Folate

A cup of parsnips contains approximately 90 micrograms of folate. Pregnant women are advised to consume at least 600 micrograms of folate each day because it is essential for nervous system health and development. Experts associate folate deficiency with neural tube defects in newborns. Folate is also necessary for efficient metabolism, cell energy production, and nervous system health. Sometimes folate is recommended as a  complementary supplement to treat postpartum and general depression.

7. Vitamin C

Parsnips are a good source of vitamin C, a water-soluble antioxidant that helps the immune system fight infections. It may also remove some harmful free radicals from the body. Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, helps maintain healthy bones, teeth, skin, and blood vessels. Vegetables contain the most vitamin C when they are fresh, and this amount declines over time, so fresh parsnips are the best source of this vitamin.

8. Iron and Protein

People frequently obtain iron and phosphorous from animal products, so there are many benefits to parsnips for people following vegetarian or vegan diets. Eating parsnips regularly can help prevent anemia. The root plant contains several nutrients necessary for red blood cell production, including iron, vitamin C, phosphorous, and several B-complex vitamins.

9. Weight Loss

The weight loss benefits of parsnips come from their high fiber content and sweet flavor. Fiber makes parsnips a very filling vegetable that reduces hunger for hours after consumption. The sweet flavor can satisfy cravings without the empty calories associated with many sugary foods. The manganese in parsnips also aids in blood sugar regulation. Parsnips are also low in fat and ideal for flavoring soups and other dishes.

10 Cardovascular Health.

Parsnips are an excellent source of vitamin K and potassium. The latter is a vasodilator, which means it helps blood vessels stay open, avoiding constriction that could inhibit blood flow. Potassium is essential for healthy circulation and reduces the risk of high blood pressure. The folate helps the body reduce homocysteine in the blood, high levels of which are linked to heart disease.
