Monday.
After breakfast we had an enjoyable visit from Yolande and Leo. Yolande had come to cut Elizabeth’s hair. She did this in the spare bedroom whilst Leo and I chatted about everything under the sun and put the world right.
When Elizabeth emerged with short hair I said she looked like a pixie but nobody knew what I meant.
Pixies are mythical creatures of English folklore considered to be particularly concentrated in the areas around Devon and Cornwall.
Here is a drawing of some pixies.
I always maintain Elizabeth’s anonymity as far as pictures on here are concerned, so I can’t show you her pixie haircut. But here are two ladies who have that style:
My lady looks lovely with here hair in this style. Many thanks to Chief Hair Stylist Yolande.
After lunch we went cycling along a nearby recreational cycle path. I was very nervous but felt I had made great progress. Unfortunately, near the end of the trip I had a fall when stopping. No serious injury but a big shock to the body as I landed on a hard surface. I had come to The Netherlands with a slightly sprained wrist which I got by pulling the car hand brake too tightly. This latest bang has made the sprain a bit worse and more painful. So, I’m sorry loyal fans, but I will have to forego the pleasures of cycling for the time being. But like John Wayne I will be back in the saddle as soon as possible.
According to Duolingo, which is the app we use for language learning, I am in the top league (diamond) of Dutch learners. I wish that translated into being more fluent here in the Netherlands. I’m still struggling, but like in everything I do I will persevere. All our friends here are very encouraging and understanding.
Dinner was Roast potatoes with fresh vegetables prepared by the Chief Chef. Elizabeth has come to enjoy roast potatoes since living in England. But she cooks them in what I call the French way - small pieces of potatoes with onion. Delicious. Dutch potatoes are very good and roast beautifully.
As Samuel Pepys said in his famous diary…
“And so to bed”….
