In England we have the expression “on yer bike” which is used to tell people to go away quickly.
We also had a right wing politician called Norman Tebbitt who told the unemployed that they should “get on their bikes to find work”.
Well I got on my bike yesterday. I wasn’t going away and I wasn’t looking for work .
My priority was learning how to start and how to stop!
After cycling round and round the paths next to the apartment I think i got it and I am now confident enough to go further afield tomorrow. So with my ever present trainer (grateful thanks to Elizabeth) we will make a trip out on to the roads and along a recreational cycle path that leads to the area we want to eventually visit. It will be strange for me to be driving on the right (or the wrong side as we Brits call it). I’ve already had a couple of near misses when crossing the road. But I’m confident that with my Chief Road Safety Adviser leading the way I will stay safe.
One of my favourite songs is “a pub with no beer” by the Australian singer Slim Dusty.
So I was surprised when we actually found a pub with no beer here in Wormer. This is a pity because it’s the only pub in Wormer!
Wapen van Wormer translates as the Wormer arms in English. (Our local pub in England is called the Portsmouth Arms).
We have walked past this establishment several times and it has always been closed. We now think it has been another sad casualty of the Covid pandemic. But maybe they have seen me coming and think I’m an English lager lout! I know my fellow countrymen have a bad reputation here in that regard.
But I must point out that I seldom drink alcohol these days after a run in with mouth cancer and a very strict Chief Health Advisor. But I have enjoyed one or two glasses of cold Heineken whilst on holiday here. Proost!
