Elizabeth and I would never hurt an animal. But we do have an ongoing battle with the neighbourhood cats (of which there are many) who seem to think that our garden is there personal toilet. We regularly have to clean up after them. When I say we I mean Elizabeth!
Over the years I developed a strategy to discourage the furry fiends from visiting. I bought a water pistol! I figured this would not harm them and would hopefully discourage them from further visits. In practice I hardly ever got anywhere near them and usually ended up soaking myself.
Elizabeth’s strategy is somewhat different. On spotting a cat in the garden the rushes out the back door shouting strange Dutch words and waving her arms. Most cats run away. I think some of the neighbours are thinking of moving too.
The problem is that most of our “gifts” are deposited at night and apart from a sprinkling of black pepper in affected areas we have yet to come up with a way to stop that.
If any of you have any ideas we would be grateful to hear from you. I tried electronic cat scarers before and that did not work.
Another day in quarantine for us.
We are going to do some maintenance on Elizabeth’s Ebike which needs its tires inflating after not being used for a while. We may have to buy a new pump after quarantine. A Dutch lady is not complete without a bike. So it’s important that we keep it well maintained. Then Elizabeth can enjoy cycling around the beautiful Hampshire countryside which surrounds us. Cycling up and down hills is a new experience for her. She is looking forward to the first trip after quarantine.
Other than that the usual day in paradise with Indian Vegetable curry and rice for dinner. Elizabeth had never eaten curry before coming here and was a bit wary when I first introduced her to it. It is a very Mild (Tikka Masala). We cook it in the slow cooker and freeze the extra portions. This usually gives us enough for five or six weeks.
Keep safe and watch out for the furry fiends!

I think this is a nice blog. Especially because I am a Dutch woman who lives in England.
I read the blog about the plants, mis really interesting. The story about the cats too, because in Holland
I also had cats in my garden, who belong to my neighbours and always used my garden as a toilet.
Hope to read more in your next blog.
Hi dear Clive and Elisabeth,
The best method to keep the cats from the neighbours and maybe wild ones is to take your own cat.....;- you probably know. (Maybe the gardencenter have some things to keep them away)
We've got one, a Light red male cat named Lumos (from Harry Potter, means Light) he's very dear to us and 13 years old.
Enjoy your daily blogs about gardening, delicious food etc etc. You are really a talentfull writer Clive, Keep on going!
Love from Lucia and John
Ps lovely weather here!! I think the same with you.
Dear Lucia and John. Thank you for your advice. We are now considering getting a tiger or a leopard!that should keep the others away!
