The Laundry Economy Experiment

I

In the current economic situation and thinking of the environment the chief laundress and I decided that we would check how much each clothing wash is costing us in terms of power used.

Our washing machine has an eco setting which we have not used yet. I know this will use less water but it takes an over an hour longer to complete . As time is never an issue for us with the laundry we decided to give it a try and measure the cost with our smart meter.

We started with our normal 1 hour wash. This came out at a cost of 32p.

Then we did an eco wash. The cost was 27p. But it took 3 hours 30 minutes. This means we could save £5 a year and help the environment by a only minuscule amount.

So we have decided not to be environmental heroes.

The experiment was worthwhile in that we now know how much each wash costs and we will ensure we only wash full loads.

If you have a smart meter you can try this for yourselves.  Different households with different needs may well show greater savings and environmental benefits.  Let me know by commenting in the link if you do so.

So, the laundry is finished for another week.

But the ironing has not yet begun…..
