An apple a day….

I once heard a story about a snake, a beautiful woman, a man and an apple tree. It did not end well for the man (or mankind).

So I was a bit wary when my own temptress said she wanted to show me an apple tree she had discovered whilst out walking. We each eat an apple every day and I think she thought we might do some foraging. The tree is located in the park next to our local playing fields.

Sad to say the remaining apples were to high on the tree for us to reach any.  So we will continue to pick our apples at the supermarket.

Some interesting apple facts to think about whilst crunching your next apple.

6. Apples are available in grocery stores all year long thanks to the global market, but the Northern Hemisphere typically considers as early as July and as late as November apple season. September and October are peak months

7. Apples ripen up to 10 times faster at room temperature than if they are refrigerated.

8. Apple trees take at least four to five years to start producing fruit. Some take as many as 10 years.

9. An average apple tree produces 840 pounds (380 kilos) of fruit each year.

10. Apples are a member of the rose family of plants, which also includes pears, peaches, cherries, and plums.

11. Apple juice was one of the earliest prescribed antidepressants.

12. An apple has about 80 calories. They are fat-free, sodium-free, and cholesterol-free and also are an excellent source of fiber.

On our way home from the forbidden fruit tree we passed by the playing fields and saw some of the local youth teams playing soccer.

We both enjoyed watching the enthusiastic young players. It has put us in the mood to watch the football World Cup which starts in November. We a really looking forward to any matches between The Netherlands and England should things get that far.
