Recently Elizabeth said to me that some of our garden plants needed “stikstof” (pronounced stick stuff). I couldn’t work out why we would want to put glue on our plants or what good it would do them. But our trusty translator Ap told me that “Stikstof” is Dutch for Nitrogen and I did know that plants need that.
My head gardener (I was going to call her “assistant” - but then I remembered the sharp knives in the kitchen) had done some more research on Google and had all the information we needed at her fingertips. (She has very fast internet fingers).
We know that our soil here is very chalky and therefore Alkaline. Certain plants we have prefer acidic soils if they are to flourish.
Here are some examples of those that prefer acidic soil:
Hydrangea
So what’s the solution? A plant food especially for acidic loving plants was easy to find at Amazon.
We carefully weighed out the correct amount of pellets for each plant and applied the pellets I hope to be able to show you the “green shoots of recovery” later.
Moving on....
Monday is our grocery delivery day from Sainsbury’s. We have been lucky to be able to get weekly deliveries since lockdown started. Elizabeth misses going to the supermarket a couple of times a week (in Holland she shops every day). So after we finish quarantine we are going to see if Sainsbury’s is now letting more than one person at a time into the shop. If so we will be able to don our fashionable masks and make shopping trips. Watch this space for more shopping news!
Today’s culinary adventure is a vegetable (peppers, onions, beansprouts, tomatoes and mushrooms) stir fry with sweet chilli sauce and Indian pilau rice. I have a professional wok which produces excellent results. This meal is one of our favourites and we eat it regularly.
Now it’s time for more “circuit training” in the garden. We will try to get our daily steps in before lunch.
More tomorrow.....
